Spotted
The Resplendent Quetzal is arguably one of the world's most beautiful birds, with iridescent green plumage, a vibrant red breast, and extraordinarily long tail feathers in males. It is a symbol of Central American cloud forests.
Where to spot
Inhabits humid montane and cloud forests, typically at high elevations, from southern Mexico through Central America to western Panama.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, low, mournful calls. Look for it perched quietly in fruiting trees or high in the forest canopy. Patience and a good pair of binoculars are essential.
When to spot
Diurnal, most active at dawn and dusk. Often sits motionless for extended periods in the canopy.
