Spotted
The Rufous Trogon, with its yellow-bellied variant, is a captivating bird of the Neotropics. Males feature iridescent green upperparts, a bright yellow bill, and vivid rufous underparts, which may appear more yellowish in certain light or populations.
Where to spot
This variant (T. chrysochloros) is typically found in specific parts of South America, especially in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, and parts of Paraguay and Argentina. It prefers humid forests.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic upright perch in the mid-story of the forest. The combination of its green back, rufous (sometimes yellowish-tinged) belly, and bright yellow bill helps distinguish it. Listen for its soft, resonant hooting calls.
When to spot
Present year-round in its native habitat. Generally more active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, making these times ideal for observation.
