Spotted
The Black-headed Trogon is a vibrant and relatively common bird with a glossy black head, iridescent green upperparts, and a bright red belly. It is a striking resident of Neotropical forests.
Where to spot
Found in lowland and foothill evergreen forests, semi-deciduous forests, and mature secondary growth, from southeastern Mexico through Central America to northern Colombia.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic, often rapid, hooting calls. Look for it perched upright in the mid-story or understory of dense forests. The male's black head and green body are unmistakable.
When to spot
Diurnal, active throughout the day, often sitting quietly for long periods.
