The Elegant Trogon is a stunning bird native to the southwestern United States and Central America, renowned for the male's iridescent green head and back, a metallic red belly, and finely barred white and black tail feathers. Females are duller but still beautiful.
Where to spot
Found from southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico in the U.S., south through Mexico to Honduras. Prefers sycamore-lined canyons and oak-pine woodlands at moderate elevations.
How to spot
Look for its upright, motionless perch in the mid-story of riparian trees. The male's distinctive red belly and patterned tail are key. Listen for its unique, barking 'co-AH' call, often repeated, or a series of 'cah cah cah' notes.
When to spot
In its northern range (U.S.), it is a summer breeder (May-September). In Mexico and Central America, it is a year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon.
