Spotted
The Gartered Trogon is a small, colorful trogon found across Central and northern South America. Males boast a dazzling iridescent blue-green or golden-green back, a vibrant yellow belly, and a distinctive white breast band, while females are more subdued.
Where to spot
Widespread from southern Mexico through Central America and into parts of northern South America (Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador). Inhabits humid evergreen forests, forest edges, and plantations.
How to spot
Look for this bird perched quietly in the mid-story of forests. The male's white breast band and yellow belly are key identifiers. Listen for its distinctive series of short, soft 'cows' or 'kows' that can help pinpoint its location.
When to spot
A year-round resident in its range. Most active and vocal during the early morning hours and late afternoon.
