Spotted
The Red-winged Fairywren is a beautiful species with males displaying vibrant blue, black, and rufous (red-brown) plumage, including distinctive red-brown patches on their wings. It inhabits dense, damp undergrowth.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth in wet forests, swamps, and along watercourses in the wetter southwestern corner of Western Australia.
How to spot
Look for them foraging low in dense, often tangled vegetation. Listen for their lively, high-pitched calls. They often move in small groups, so spotting one might lead to others.
When to spot
Most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Can be seen throughout the day, especially in overcast conditions.
Male Red-winged Fairywrens are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which include fluffing up their brilliant blue crown and cheek feathers.
