The Rufous-backed Fairywren (Malurus) is a widespread species across much of mainland Australia, known for the male's striking blue, black, and rufous plumage. It adapts to a variety of shrubby habitats.
Where to spot
Varied shrubby habitats, including arid and semi-arid scrublands, woodlands, and heathlands across much of inland and northern Australia.
How to spot
Look for them foraging in small parties, often low to the ground in dense shrubs. Listen for their rapid, trilling calls. Males are easily identifiable by their vibrant colors.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially conspicuous in the breeding season when males are displaying.
