Spotted
The Rufous-backed Fairywren (Clytomyias) is a charming and distinctive fairywren species, characterized by its bright rufous back and cap. It prefers montane forests of New Guinea.
Where to spot
Montane rainforests and mossy forests at higher elevations in New Guinea.
How to spot
Search the understory and mid-story of montane forests. They can be quite agile and quick, so remain still and watch for movement among the foliage. Their calls can also help with detection.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, often more conspicuous during cooler parts of the day or after rain.
Unlike many fairywrens, which are typically found in more open or scrubby habitats, this species is adapted to the dense, cool environment of high-altitude rainforests.
