The Opalton Grasswren is a recently described and extremely rare grasswren, recognized by its distinctive facial markings and preference for specific stony desert habitats.
Where to spot
Known only from a very small area of stony desert country dominated by gidgee and spinifex near Opalton, central Queensland, Australia.
How to spot
Requires highly specialized expeditions and extensive patience in its very specific habitat. Listen carefully for its quiet calls and watch for brief glimpses among sparse vegetation, as it is extremely cryptic.
When to spot
Observations are rare due to its restricted range and secretive nature. It is active year-round, primarily during daylight hours.
Discovered as a distinct species only in 2011, it is considered one of Australia's rarest and most geographically restricted birds, confined to a very small and unique habitat.
