Spotted
The Splendid Fairywren is arguably one of Australia's most dazzling birds, with males boasting an almost entirely iridescent blue plumage. It is found in arid to semi-arid scrublands and woodlands.
Where to spot
Dry woodlands, mallee, scrublands, and heathlands across much of central and western Australia.
How to spot
Look for small, active groups foraging low in dense shrubs. Their vibrant blue makes males stand out, but they move quickly. Listen for their varied, often trilling calls.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season when males are in their brilliant blue plumage and actively displaying. Early morning is often ideal.

The male's 'splendid' blue plumage is non-pigmentary, meaning the color comes from the microscopic structure of the feathers scattering light, rather than pigments.
