Spotted
The Red-fronted Antpecker is a small, unique finch found in the forests of West Africa. It is distinguished by its reddish-orange forehead and a finely barred appearance on its underparts.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests of West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Cameroon. Prefers dense forest understory, often near ant trails.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to spot. Look for it hopping on the forest floor or low vegetation near ant columns. Listen for very soft, high-pitched calls. Patience is paramount.
When to spot
Year-round. Most active during the day when foraging, especially when ant swarms are present.
Antpeckers are known for their habit of following ant swarms, preying on insects disturbed by the ants, a behavior unusual for finches.
