Spotted
The Angolan Waxbill is a small, engaging finch found in south-central Africa. It has a grey head, brown body, and a vibrant yellow belly, closely resembling its relatives.
Where to spot
Found in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia. Inhabits grasslands, savannas, and cultivated areas, often near moist or swampy locations.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on seeds in grassy fields or low bushes. Its small size and rapid movements can make it challenging; binoculars are recommended.
When to spot
Year-round in its range. Best observed during the breeding season when they are more vocal and visible.
While similar to the Yellow-bellied Waxbill, the Angolan Waxbill typically has a more extensive yellow belly and a slightly different habitat preference.
