Grant's Bluebill is a rare and secretive finch found in the lowland forests of Central Africa. Males have a bright red head, chest, and mantle, with dark underparts, and a distinctive blue bill.
Where to spot
Found in lowland rainforests of Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Prefers dense undergrowth, secondary forest, and forest edges.
How to spot
Requires significant patience. Look for it foraging on the ground or in low vegetation. Its large blue bill and red plumage (in males) are distinctive.
When to spot
Year-round, but notoriously difficult to find due to its rarity and secretive nature. Early mornings might offer the best chance.
Bluebills are known for their extremely large and powerful bills, which are specialized for cracking open tough seeds and fruits.
