Spotted
Woodhouse's Antpecker is a cryptic, small finch inhabiting the dense forests of Central Africa. It has a distinctive red patch on its forehead (in males) and finely barred underparts.
Where to spot
Distributed across lowland rainforests of Central Africa, from Cameroon to Democratic Republic of Congo. Found in dense undergrowth, often near driver ant swarms.
How to spot
Look for slight movements on the forest floor, especially near driver ant columns. Its excellent camouflage makes it very hard to see. Listening for very quiet calls might help.
When to spot
Year-round. Best observed when following ant swarms, as they are otherwise very inconspicuous.
Antpeckers, including this species, have specialized bills that are thin and pointed, aiding them in picking up small insects from the forest floor.
