Where to spot
Widespread in East and Northeast Africa, from Sudan and Eritrea south to Tanzania. Inhabits grasslands, savannas, cultivated areas, and gardens.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on grass seeds on the ground or in low bushes. The small red cheek patch is the key identification mark, though it can be subtle.
