Grasslands, woodlands, and open forests with dense grassy undergrowth and scattered shrubs across northern and eastern Australia.
How to spot
Look for them foraging in grassy areas, often clinging to tall grass stems. The male's red and black coloration makes it quite obvious. Listen for their high-pitched, whirring calls.
When to spot
Males are most conspicuous in their breeding plumage during the warmer months (spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere). Active throughout the day.
