The Sudan Golden Sparrow is a striking sparrow species found in the Sahel region of Africa, famous for the brilliant golden-yellow plumage of the male. It is a highly social bird.
Where to spot
Sahel belt of Africa, from Mauritania east to Sudan and Eritrea. Inhabits arid and semi-arid savannas, acacia woodlands, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
Look for the male's unmistakable golden-yellow plumage. They are often found in large, noisy flocks, especially at waterholes or feeding on grain fields. Very conspicuous.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but highly nomadic, following rainfall and food availability. Breeding season (often after rains) is when males are most colourful.
