Spotted by
The House Sparrow is a ubiquitous and highly adaptable small bird, instantly recognizable by its familiar chirping calls and close association with human habitation. Males have grey caps and black bibs.
Where to spot
Globally distributed, found in nearly every type of human-modified habitat, including cities, towns, farms, and suburbs. Absent only from dense forests, deserts, and high mountains.
How to spot
Look for them in flocks around buildings, gardens, and urban areas. Listen for their persistent chirping and chattering calls. Males have a grey crown, chestnut nape, black bib, and streaked back; females are plainer brown with a distinct supercilium.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round, as they are non-migratory and largely sedentary. They are most active during the day, particularly around dawn and dusk.

House Sparrows are incredibly resilient and have spread alongside human civilization to become one of the most widely distributed wild birds in the world, found on every continent except Antarctica.

Because we have a bird friendly garden, we have at any time of the day at least seven sparrows, if not more, coming to eat, drink or bathe.
