Spotted
A striking sunbird, male Orange-tufted Sunbirds feature a small but noticeable orange-yellow tuft on their sides, along with iridescent green upperparts and a bright yellow belly. Females are duller.
Where to spot
Found in West and Central Africa, inhabiting riparian forests, swamps, and forest edges, often near water bodies.
How to spot
Look for it along riverbanks and in swampy areas where flowering vegetation is present. The orange tufts on the male are a key identification mark, though sometimes hidden.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours, especially when foraging at flowering plants.
The Orange-tufted Sunbird is often found near rivers and wetlands, making it somewhat unique among sunbirds which generally prefer drier forest or savanna habitats.
