The Mariqua Sunbird is a common and widespread species across much of Africa, with males displaying brilliant iridescent green and purple plumage, and a distinctive red breast band. It is often a garden visitor.

Widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, from Eritrea and Ethiopia south to South Africa, inhabiting savannas, woodlands, acacia scrub, and gardens.

Easily spotted at flowering plants and shrubs, even in urban environments. Its iridescent plumage flashes in the sun, and its lively, high-pitched calls are often heard.
