Stuhlmann's Sunbird is a beautiful montane species, with males displaying iridescent green, blue, and a prominent red breast band. It is a common inhabitant of the higher altitude forests of East Africa.
Where to spot
Found in the montane forests and bamboo zones of the Albertine Rift and other East African highlands, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
How to spot
Search for it among flowering trees and shrubs in montane forests. Its brilliant colors are easy to spot in good light. Its energetic calls can lead you to it.
When to spot
Active throughout the year, with peak feeding activity during morning and late afternoon. Best observed when preferred flowering plants are in bloom.
This species, along with several others in its complex, was formerly considered a subspecies of the 'Double-collared Sunbird' group, but has been recognized as a distinct species due to genetic and morphological differences.
