Spotted
The Violet-bellied Sunbird is a stunning species with males displaying vibrant iridescent green and blue upperparts, a red breast, and a distinctive violet belly. It prefers forest and woodland habitats.
Where to spot
Found in Central and West Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola, inhabiting lowland rainforests, forest edges, and dense woodlands.
How to spot
Search for it in the mid-story and canopy of humid forests and woodlands. Its brilliant colors, especially the violet belly, make it relatively easy to spot in good light. Listen for its calls.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during morning and late afternoon feeding activities. Look for it when flowering plants are abundant.
The violet iridescence on the male's belly is particularly striking in good light, a feature that distinguishes it from many other sunbird species with red or yellow underparts.
