Where to spot
Dense evergreen forests, bamboo thickets, and often gardens or plantations with dense undergrowth, from India and Sri Lanka across Southeast Asia to Indonesia.
How to spot
Look on the forest floor or in dense undergrowth. Males are easily identifiable by their orange head. Listen for its clear, melodious song, often sung from a low perch.
When to spot
Year-round resident in most areas, some northern populations are migratory. Active early morning and late afternoon.
This thrush is a popular cage bird in some parts of its range due to its beautiful plumage and melodious song, though this has negatively impacted wild populations.
