Spotted
White's Thrush, also known as the Scaly Thrush, is a large, secretive thrush with beautifully mottled brown and black 'scale-like' plumage across its body. It spends most of its time foraging on the forest floor.
Where to spot
Breeds across Northern Asia and parts of Europe, including Russia and Japan. It migrates to winter in Southeast Asia, particularly in tropical and subtropical forests.
How to spot
Search quiet, damp forest floors, especially areas with leaf litter where it forages. Its camouflage makes it very hard to see, so listening for its unique, eerie whistle is often the best way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Extremely challenging to observe during breeding or winter due to its secretive nature and camouflaged plumage. Best chances are during migration periods when it may occur in less dense habitats.

Its unique call is a distinctive, drawn-out, mournful whistle, often described as sounding like a human exhaling slowly, which can be heard from a distance in dense forests.
