Spotted
The Ocellated Poorwill is a small, cryptically plumaged nightjar, named for the distinctive 'ocellated' (eye-like) spots on its plumage.
Where to spot
Found in the understory of humid tropical and subtropical forests, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America to parts of South America (e.g., Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina).
How to spot
Best observed by listening for its distinctive calls at night. When searching visually, scan the forest floor or low perches with a spotlight, moving slowly and carefully.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, it is most active from dusk to dawn. It can be found roosting quietly on the ground or low branches during daylight hours.

Its exceptional camouflage allows it to blend seamlessly with the forest floor and leaf litter, making it incredibly difficult to spot during the day.
