The Martial Eagle is Africa's largest and most powerful eagle, known for its impressive size, dark upperparts, and white underparts with dark spotting. It is a formidable predator, preying on a wide range of medium-sized mammals and large birds.
Where to spot
Open savannas, grasslands, and semi-desert areas across sub-Saharan Africa. Prefers areas with tall trees for perching and nesting.
How to spot
Look for its immense size, dark brown upperparts, white belly with sparse dark spotting, and powerful legs. Its flight is strong and purposeful, with long, broad wings. Listen for its rarely given, deep 'kloee-kloee' calls.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Often seen soaring high, sometimes at incredible altitudes, or perched on a prominent tree or pylon.
