The Chilean Hawk is a medium-sized raptor native to temperate forests of South America, often considered a subspecies of the Bicolored Hawk. It is a swift and agile hunter.
Where to spot
Found in Chile and southwestern Argentina, primarily inhabiting temperate forests and woodlands.
How to spot
Scan the forest canopy and edges for perched individuals or look for its rapid, agile flight through the trees. Listening for its distinctive calls can also aid in detection.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon. It is resident year-round in its range.
This hawk is a key predator in the Valdivian temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina, playing an important role in the local ecosystem by preying on birds and small mammals.
