Spotted
The Red-headed Vulture is a large, critically endangered Old World vulture found in the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia, known for its distinctive bare, deep red head and neck. It is primarily a scavenger.
Where to spot
Open country, savannas, and woodlands across parts of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and scattered areas of Southeast Asia. However, its range is now highly fragmented.
How to spot
Look for its large size, black body, white patch on the breast, pale grey patches at the base of the primaries, and most notably, its bare, vivid red head and neck. Any sighting is significant due to its rarity.
When to spot
Year-round, active during daylight. Best seen soaring or around carcasses, though sightings are now extremely rare.

Once widespread, its population has suffered a catastrophic decline, largely due to the veterinary drug diclofenac, making it one of the most critically endangered birds globally.
