Spotted

The Madeiran Chaffinch is an island subspecies of the Common Chaffinch, unique to the island of Madeira. It is slightly darker and often more robust than its continental counterparts, a common evolutionary trait in island populations.

Where to spot

Endemic to the island of Madeira in the North Atlantic. It is widespread across various habitats, including native laurel forests, pine plantations, cultivated lands, and gardens.

How to spot

Seek it in forested areas or semi-open habitats. Distinguish it from other finches by its typical chaffinch size and shape, noting its somewhat darker plumage. Its song, a familiar Chaffinch 'chip-chip-chip-choo-choo-cheee', may have regional variations.

When to spot

Resident year-round. Like most finches, it is most vocal and active during the breeding season in spring and early summer, when males sing vigorously to attract mates.
