The Cape Canary is a common and widespread finch native to Southern Africa, easily recognized by its grey head and bright yellow underparts. It is a familiar sight in gardens and fynbos landscapes.
Where to spot
Endemic to Southern Africa, ranging from South Africa and Lesotho to parts of Namibia and Botswana. It thrives in fynbos, karoo scrub, open woodlands, farmlands, and urban areas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, varied, and often tinkling song. They are often seen foraging on the ground for seeds or perched openly on fences and shrubs.
When to spot
Observable throughout the year. Breeding season, generally from late winter through summer, is when they are most vocal and active.
