Where to spot
Found across North America. Breeds in coniferous and mixed forests of Canada and the northeastern/western US, wintering south to the southern US.
How to spot
Look for them in coniferous forests or at backyard feeders. Listen for their rich, warbling song, which is often described as a 'robin-like' song delivered with gusto.

Despite its name, the Purple Finch is more raspberry-red than purple, leading to the common mnemonic 'Purple Finches are dipped in raspberry, House Finches are dipped in Kool-Aid'.
