Spotted
The Spot-throated Flameback is a medium-sized woodpecker known for its unique spotted throat pattern, which distinguishes it from other flamebacks. It typically inhabits moist broadleaf forests, foraging actively on tree trunks.
Where to spot
Found in the Philippines, specifically on the islands of Palawan, Balabac, Busuanga, and Culion, inhabiting low-lying forests, mangroves, and sometimes plantations.
How to spot
Look for its dark, often olive-green, plumage with the diagnostic spotted throat. Its loud, rapid drumming and characteristic 'chup-chup' calls can help in locating it within its forest habitat.
When to spot
Can be observed throughout the year during daytime hours. Early mornings are generally the most active period for foraging and vocalization.
This species can sometimes be found foraging in mixed-species flocks with other birds, a behavior that offers increased vigilance against predators while feeding.
