Spotted
The Grey-breasted Woodpecker is a medium-sized species characterized by its black and white barred back, a pale grey breast, and a red crown in males. It is often found in more open woodland habitats.
Where to spot
Inhabits dry forests, semi-open woodlands, and scrubby areas in western Mexico, primarily on the Pacific slope.
How to spot
Look for its pale grey breast contrasting with the black and white back. It often forages on the trunks and larger branches of trees and cacti. Listen for its sharp, distinct calls and regular drumming.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its specific Mexican habitat. Active throughout the day, with best viewing in the mornings when temperatures are cooler and activity is higher.
Unlike some of its close relatives, this woodpecker is more generalized in its foraging, taking insects from bark crevices, but also supplementing its diet with fruits and berries from trees.
