The African Piculet is a very small and inconspicuous woodpecker, generally dull olive-brown with subtle markings. It is the only piculet species found in Africa. It actively forages on small branches and bamboo for insects. Its diminutive size makes it easily overlooked.
Where to spot
Found in tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests across West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Uganda and Angola.
How to spot
Look for its incredibly tiny size and quick movements on thin branches and vines. Listen for its extremely high-pitched, soft 'tsee' calls or almost imperceptible tapping. Requires immense patience and good hearing to spot.
When to spot
Active year-round. Most active during the early morning hours. Vocalizations are very soft and high-pitched.
