The Yellow-tufted Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker distinguished by its predominantly black plumage, white rump, and a characteristic patch of yellow feathers on its forehead or crown. It is a common species in its range.
Where to spot
Found in tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests, secondary growth, and forest borders across northern and central South America, including the Amazon basin and parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil.
How to spot
Scan tree trunks and larger branches in its habitat for this black and white bird. Look for the yellow tuft which gives it its name. Listen for its loud, chattering calls and rhythmic drumming.
When to spot
Resident year-round in its tropical habitat. Active during daylight hours, generally more active in the cooler parts of the day.
