Spotted
The Hairy Woodpecker is a common medium-sized woodpecker across North America, resembling the smaller Downy Woodpecker but noticeably larger with a proportionally longer bill. It has a black and white checkerboard pattern and a red patch on the nape in males.
Where to spot
Widespread across North America, from Canada to Mexico. Inhabits mature deciduous, coniferous, and mixed forests, as well as large parks and suburban areas with mature trees.
How to spot
Distinguish from Downy Woodpecker by its larger size and longer bill. Listen for its sharp, distinct 'peek' call and rapid, strong drumming. Look for it foraging on main trunks and larger branches.
When to spot
Resident year-round throughout its extensive range. Active during daylight hours, often foraging on larger tree trunks.

Despite their similar appearance to Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers are more often found in mature forests and less frequently visit urban feeders, preferring larger trees for foraging.
