The smallest gull in the world, renowned for its dainty flight and tern-like appearance. It has a distinctive dark underwing in all plumages.
Where to spot
Breeds primarily in northern Europe and Asia, migrating to winter along coastal waters of Europe, the Mediterranean, and occasionally North America. Found on large freshwater bodies, estuaries, and coastal shallows.
How to spot
Look for its exceptionally small size and rapid, buoyant flight. Note the dark blackish underwings and the dark head in breeding plumage. In non-breeding, look for a clean white head with a small dark cap and ear spot.
When to spot
Best observed during spring and fall migration periods when birds are moving to and from their breeding grounds. Wintering birds can be found along southern coasts.
