Spotted
The Red-legged Kittiwake is a medium-sized gull of the North Pacific, closely related to the Black-legged Kittiwake but distinguished by its bright red legs and shorter bill.
Where to spot
Breeds on remote islands in the Bering Sea, particularly the Pribilof and Commander Islands. Spends winters largely offshore in the North Pacific.
How to spot
Look for its clean white head, grey mantle, and entirely black wingtips. The bright red legs are the key diagnostic feature, especially visible when perched or in flight.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (late spring to late summer) at its cliff colonies. Can be seen at sea year-round, though often at great distances.

This species is highly pelagic, spending much of its life far out at sea, only coming to land to breed on remote, rocky cliffs, making it a true ocean wanderer.
