Lichtenstein's Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles lichtensteinii', is a nocturnal species found across North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, known for its cryptic plumage and distinctive call. It is smaller than many other sandgrouse species.
Where to spot
Inhabits rocky deserts, wadis, and arid scrubland from Morocco to the Indian subcontinent.
How to spot
Look for them near water sources after sunset or before sunrise. Listen for their peculiar, often repeated, whistle-like call, 'kattar-kattar', which is key to locating them in the dark. A spotlight may be necessary for identification.
When to spot
Best observed at night or very early dawn, when they fly to waterholes. During the day, they are usually hidden and inactive.
