Spotted
The Spotted Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles senegallus', is a medium-sized sandgrouse found across the arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. It is distinguished by its finely spotted plumage, which provides excellent camouflage.
Where to spot
Inhabits deserts, semi-deserts, and stony plains from Morocco eastward through the Arabian Peninsula to Central Asia.
How to spot
Focus on open, desolate landscapes with sparse vegetation. Look for flocks flying in fast, direct lines towards water. On the ground, their cryptic plumage makes them hard to spot, so observe movement carefully.
When to spot
Best seen in the early morning or late afternoon when they fly in large numbers to communal watering holes. They are present year-round.

Unlike many birds, sandgrouse drink by sucking water, rather than scooping it up, allowing them to drink quickly and efficiently at limited water sources.
