The Black-faced Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles decoratus', is an attractive species endemic to East Africa, named for the distinctive black facial markings of the male. It prefers dry, thorny bushland and semi-desert habitats.
Where to spot
Restricted to arid and semi-arid regions of East Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Tanzania, preferring bushland and Acacia scrub.
How to spot
Look for them in areas with thorny scrub and scattered trees. Males are readily identifiable by their black face mask and chestnut breast band. Females have more subdued but equally camouflaged plumage.
When to spot
Best observed at dawn or dusk when they gather at waterholes. They are resident birds, visible all year.
