Spotted
Pallas's Sandgrouse is a migratory sandgrouse known for its exceptionally long, pointed central tail feathers and feathered legs. It inhabits arid and semi-arid steppes and deserts across Central Asia.
Where to spot
Arid and semi-arid steppes, deserts, and semi-deserts across Central Asia. Breeding range from Kazakhstan to Mongolia and China. Wintering further south.
How to spot
Look for flocks flying rapidly and directly, often to water sources, or foraging on the ground. Its pointed tail feathers and feathered legs are key identification features. Listen for its distinctive, rather grating calls.
When to spot
Year-round in parts of its range. Migratory in others, so observation depends on location and season. Active during daylight hours, especially morning and evening.

Pallas's Sandgrouse is famous for its infrequent 'irruptions' or mass migrations, during which large numbers may appear far outside their usual range, sometimes reaching Western Europe, a remarkable nomadic behavior.
