Burchell's Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles burchelli', is a species endemic to southern Africa, characterized by its fine spotting and a preference for sandy areas. It is one of the more uniformly colored sandgrouse.
Where to spot
Found in the arid and semi-arid regions of southern Africa, particularly in the Kalahari Desert, Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, preferring sandy savannas and thornveld.
How to spot
Search in sandy, arid plains with scattered bushes. Their excellent camouflage makes them difficult to spot on the ground. Look for their low, direct flight to and from water points. Listen for their distinctive 'wick-wick-wick' call.
When to spot
Most active at dawn and dusk, when they gather in flocks to drink. They are resident birds, observable all year.
