The Painted Sandgrouse, 'Pterocles indicus', is a colorful and distinct species found in parts of the Indian subcontinent. Males display intricate patterns of black, white, and chestnut, making them one of the most ornate sandgrouse.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Indian subcontinent, found in rocky hills, scrubland, and open forests, particularly in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
How to spot
Look in rocky, undulating terrain with sparse vegetation. Their intricate plumage provides excellent camouflage. Listen for their mournful 'whirr-whirr-whirr' call. They are often more easily flushed than seen sitting.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon, often visiting water sources around these times. They are resident birds.
