Spotted
The Least Honeyguide is one of the smallest and most cryptic members of the honeyguide family, characterized by its drab, olive-brown plumage. It is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of other bird species. It primarily feeds on insects and beeswax.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests and forest edges across sub-Saharan Africa, from Sierra Leone to Ethiopia and Angola.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe visually. Listen carefully for its distinctive, buzzing, or insect-like trilling calls, often given from within dense foliage or high in the canopy. Patience and keen ears are essential.
When to spot
Present year-round. More vocal during the breeding season, which varies geographically. Most active in the early morning.

Despite its small size, the Least Honeyguide shares the unique ability of other honeyguides to digest beeswax, thanks to specialized gut bacteria.
