Spotted
The Spotted Honeyguide is a medium-sized honeyguide, characterized by its olive-green plumage with distinct dark spots and streaks on its underparts. It is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of barbets and other cavity-nesting birds. It primarily feeds on insects and beeswax.
Where to spot
Inhabits tropical and subtropical moist lowland forests across West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone to Uganda and Angola.
How to spot
Difficult to observe visually due to its preference for dense canopy. Listen for its distinctive, often rattling or buzzing calls, which are the primary way to detect its presence. Look for it gleaning insects from bark or searching for hives.
When to spot
Present year-round. More vocal during the breeding season. Most active in the early morning.

The unique spotted pattern on its plumage helps camouflage it against the dappled light of the forest, despite its relatively larger size among honeyguides.
