Spotted
Zenker's Honeyguide is a cryptic, small honeyguide, primarily greenish-brown, making it challenging to detect within its dense forest habitat. Like other honeyguides, it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. It is named after the German botanist and zoologist Georg Zenker.
Where to spot
Native to humid tropical lowland forests across West and Central Africa, including parts of Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, and the Central African Republic.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe visually. The primary method of detection is to listen intently for its high-pitched, often metallic or buzzing calls, which are usually given from high in the canopy. Look for slight movements in dense foliage.
When to spot
Present year-round. Its vocalizations are the best way to detect it, especially during the breeding season.
This honeyguide's elusive nature and preference for dense forest canopy make it one of the least known honeyguide species.
