Spotted
A recently described tapaculo species with a very restricted range in the high Andes of Ecuador. It is a secretive bird of humid montane scrub and forest edge.
Where to spot
Endemic to a small area of humid montane scrub and forest edge in the Andes of southern Ecuador, particularly in Azuay and Loja provinces.
How to spot
Listen for its unique vocalizations, which are the primary key to detection. Due to its restricted range and shyness, finding it requires dedicated effort and local expert guidance in its dense habitat.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be found year-round in its specific high-elevation habitat.
Named after Niels Krabbe, a prominent Danish ornithologist known for his extensive work on Neotropical birds, especially tapaculos and antpittas.
