Spotted
A distinctive, large tapaculo with a prominent white 'moustache' stripe. It is a powerful ground-dweller found in arid and semi-arid scrublands and rocky areas.
Where to spot
Endemic to the arid and semi-arid scrublands, rocky hillsides, and dry riverbeds of central Chile, from sea level up to higher elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, deep 'turk-turk-turk' calls. It can be seen foraging on the ground or perching on rocks and low bushes. Patience and binoculars are helpful as it can be wary.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially vocal during early morning. Can be observed year-round.

Unlike many tapaculos that prefer dense forest, the Moustached Turca is adapted to more open, dry, and rocky habitats, often perching on boulders.
