Spotted
A small, dark tapaculo with noticeably large feet, adapted for navigating dense undergrowth. It is a secretive resident of humid montane cloud forests.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests and cloud forests of the Andes, from central Colombia south through Ecuador and into northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often rapid, mechanical-sounding calls. It is extremely shy and difficult to see; focus on detecting it by sound and then waiting patiently near the source in dense cover.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.
Its scientific name 'macropus' literally means 'large foot,' highlighting a key morphological feature that aids its locomotion in its dense, cluttered habitat.
